Refuel and drain events are missing, doubled or wrong – what to check

Why refuel and drain events are missing, doubled or wrong in the Fuel module, and how to fix the settings and recalculate.

This article explains what to check when refuel or drain events in the TrustTrack Fuel module or Fuel tank report are missing, doubled or wrong. For the standard fuel tank report templates, see Troubleshooting of Fuel tank report module.

1. How refuel and drain events are detected

  • The Fuel module detects refuels and drains from changes in the fuel level, using the Fuel tank report parameters in the object settings.

  • A change is registered as an event only if it is larger than the configured fuel variation. The refuelled or drained amount is measured after the configured settle time.

  • The detection speed parameter must be selected. If it is not set, no refuel or drain events are shown, even if the fuel level is visible.

2. No fuel data or the Fuel module is missing

  • Check that a fuel template is applied: in LCM go to Objects → edit the object → Fuel template / Fuel tank report parameters, and click Save. The parameters are applied and the recalculation starts only after saving, even if the template was already selected.

  • Fuel level sensor (FLS): check that the correct IO is enabled in the device configuration (see the FLS Quick Start Guide). If a calibration table is used, the input function must be Linear, not P1. Note that an FLS provides fuel level only, not fuel consumption.

3. Fuel level is visible, but there are no refuel or drain events

4. Doubled refuels or false refuels / drains

  • A too short settle time can split one refuel into two events. Increase the settle time (e.g. to 60) and run a recalculation.

  • If there are many false events, apply the standard template for your fuel level source and tank capacity.

5. After changing the parameters

  • Select the date from which to recalculate (up to 3 months back) and save. The Fuel module history is recalculated; reports may take some time to be generated.

  • Recalculation cannot restore periods where the device did not send fuel data.

  • Events and notifications that were already generated with the old parameters remain in the Events section. Only the Fuel module data is recalculated.

6. Good to know

Fuel consumption while idling is available only when fuel consumption comes from CAN or OBD data. It is not available with an FLS or with average fuel consumption set in LCM / TrustTrack.

7. Contact support

Include: object name or IMEI, fuel level source (CAN or FLS), fuel tank capacity, the period and an example of the wrong or missing event, and a screenshot of the fuel graph.
