DMP: device does not receive a firmware or configuration update

How firmware and configuration updates are delivered via DMP, what task statuses mean, why an update can take long or fail (including Asset5 sleep mode), and what to send to support.

Applies to: devices registered in DMP. See the list of DMP-supported devices on doc.ruptela.com.

1. How updates are delivered

The device receives firmware, configuration and commands only when it connects to DMP. For 5th generation devices, the connection interval is set with configuration parameter 23101 (in seconds), by default every 24 hours.

To force a connection, send the SMS command: <SMSpassword> dmpfconnect

2. Task statuses

  • Pending – the device has not connected to DMP yet. You can cancel the task: open the IMEI → Operation history → ⋮ → Cancel.

  • Uploading – the device has received the task. It cannot be cancelled.

  • Timeout – the task could not be completed within 12 hours. Retry when the device has good mobile coverage.

3. Why an update takes long or fails

  • Weak mobile signal (e.g. the device is inside or under a building). Check the signal with the gsminfo SMS command. For remote firmware or configuration updates, the GSM signal level should be above 10.

  • Asset5 is sleeping. In power saving mode the modem is off, so SMS commands (including dmpfconnect) are not received. The update is delivered at the next wake-up: by time period, movement, tamper button, or by pressing the Action button for 5 seconds. A device in shipping mode wakes up only by the Action button. You can also upload a configuration locally with the mDMP mobile app.

  • The task does not start although the device answers SMS commands. The device may be registered in DMP with incorrect connection settings. This cannot be fixed from your side – contact support.

4. During a firmware update

A firmware update is a critical process. Until it finishes, the device may not respond to SMS commands or control outputs and readers. Run updates when the vehicle is not in active operation.

5. Good to know

  • A firmware update does not change configuration parameters.

  • The configuration is kept if the device loses power.

  • For devices connected to DMP via MQTT, the configuration file cannot be downloaded from DMP.

  • Setting the DMP connection interval to 5 minutes or less significantly increases data consumption.

6. Contact support

Include: IMEI, update type (firmware or configuration), task status and start time, and the responses to dmpfconnect and gsminfo.
