How to Create a Virtual Trailer

Step-by-step guide on creating virtual trailer objects in TrustTrack using beacons or temperature sensors instead of dedicated tracking devices.

Updated today

1 Introduction

A virtual trailer is a trailer object in TrustTrack that does not have its own dedicated tracking device. Instead, it uses a beacon that periodically broadcasts an ID. When a tractor unit's tracking device detects this ID, TrustTrack assigns the trailer to that vehicle and updates its position accordingly.

Virtual trailers differ from standard tracked trailers in two ways:

  • The trailer object has a fake IMEI assigned to it (it does not send data independently).

  • The trailer is a beacon-only object - its position is updated through the tractor unit that detects it.

2 Prerequisites

Gather the following information before starting:

Required Information

Details

TT2 Client ID

The client's account ID in TrustTrack.

Trailer plate numbers

A list of plate numbers to be used as object names.

Trailer IDs

Temperature sensor IDs (1-Wire) or Bluetooth beacon IDs assigned to each trailer.

Initial trailer location

Coordinates where the trailer should appear on the map (e.g., client's garage). If not important, developers may use a default location such as the Ruptela office in Vilnius.

3 Steps

3.1 Create the Object in LCM

Create the object(s) using LCM under the client's Company. Configure the object with the following settings:

Field

Value

Phone number

Use a fake phone number.

IMEI

Use a fake IMEI.

HW type

Irrelevant - select any available option.

Object delay

Leave blank.

Object type

Trailer (required).

⚠️ Warning: The phone number and IMEI must be fake to avoid confusion with real tracking objects.

3.2 Insert the Trailer ID

Enter the appropriate identifier based on the detection method used:

  • Trailer ID β€” if you are using 1-Wire temperature sensors.

  • Trailer BT ID β€” if you are using Bluetooth beacons.

3.3 Request Initial Coordinates from Ruptela Technical Support

Contact Ruptela Technical Support and provide the following:

  • The object TT2 ID of each virtual trailer created.

  • The initial coordinates where the trailer should appear on the map before it is assigned to a tractor unit.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Initial coordinates are only used for the trailer's default map position. Once the trailer is detected by a tractor unit, its position will update automatically.

4 Expected Result

Once Ruptela Technical Support has inserted the initial coordinates, the virtual trailer objects will appear on the TrustTrack map with the trailer icon. When a tractor unit detects the trailer's beacon, TrustTrack will automatically assign the trailer and begin updating its position based on the tractor's location.
